Hi Everyone, We had inquiry today about recycling - any ideas would be very welcome......Wondering if you know of any resources that could be used as baseline data for Recycling.
I am absolutely stuck for ideas as to what type of introductory activity I could use for recycling to introduce the inquiry unit.

Hey Donna,

We have done a great unit on Recycling..Firstly there is a fantstic book that anyone that is teaching about recycling should buy. It is called - The stinking story of rubbish.

I dont know if this may spark some ideas but here are some of the things we did during this unit of inquiry.

Our Central Idea or 'big idea' was We can reduce the amount of rubbish we creatge by reducing, reusing and recycling.
We investigated the things people throw away, the impact of rubbish on the environment, how we can reduce reuse and recycle.

It would be good for you to develop a poster pack of images of pollution, rubbish dumps, rubbish, things that can be reduced, reused and recycled. These posters could be used as prompts to promote student discussion and engage the children. Images are always useful for generating student questions.

*Students brainstormed all of the things that we throw away
*Students kept all of their rubbish for the day and then sorted and classified their rubbish
*Students sent home a survey to identify what people recycle and throw away.
*Parents were asked to bring in recyclables for children to sort.
*Constucted a class action plan for our classroomm to reduce, reuse, recycle our rubbish.
*Investigate 'reduce' reuse' recycle'.

Perhaps there may be poems and songs that could be used as a literacy activity, like you have with the months of the year poem.

Ahhhh I don't know how much help this will be....

Might be worth looking at the KESAB website for some ideas too

Hi!
The JP teacher next to me has year 1/2 and she has done a whole term theme on recycling. She used the movie 'Walle" (not sure of the spelling) as her central point and has done some fantastic work with her class. Her classroom looks fantastic with robots everywhere!! She also ended the theme by going to our local recycling depot.
